About

Joe Wells’ writing career began when his first book ‘Touch and Go Joe’ about his experiences of OCD was published. Since then he has made a name for himself as a stand-up comic, writer and speaker. Joe now focuses mainly on his unique brand of political comedy and in 2012, Joe was asked to support Alexei Sayle on his comeback tour.

Joe is now frequently performing stand up in comedy clubs around the UK. Night of the Living Tories was Joe’s debut hour long stand up show, in which he dug up the corpses of the British Conservative Party of the past and put them on display to horrifying consequence. Joe took his follow up show, 10 Thing I Hate About UKIP, to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2016 and in 2017 took I Hope I Die Before I Start Voting Conservative.

Joe believes in creating a kinder, more tolerant and equal society. Despite this he spends most of his time sneering at people he disagrees with. He’s everything that’s wrong with the political left but he’s trying to change. Can Joe learn to love the people whose politics we hate?

Bio

Wells grew up being taken to see Mark Thomas who he still see as one of his ‘biggest inspirations even though what we do is quite different. I had a poster of Mark’s Coca Cola show with a quote from a newspaper; “Coca Cola execs should be worried, Mark Thomas is gunning for them”

Well’s ‘angry lefty’ style of comedy has led him to support Alexei Sayle on tour, open for Frankie Boyle at the Leicester Square theatre in 2015, and the Pleasance Islington in 2016, and various TV and Radio appearances including BBC Radio 4 Extra, ‘No Pressure To Be Funny’  and Amnesty International’s ‘Human TV’.

His first hour long stand-up show ‘Night of The Living Tories’ was hugely well received and described by Chortle as ‘much more than an hour of swearing at David Cameron’. His second show, ’10 Thinks I Hate About UKIP’ had a more introspective angle, the message being ‘is that it’s more important how you behave as a person than what your politics are’.

Three Weeks wrote that Joe “handles heavy topics with the care they require and shows comedy doesn’t need to harm people: indeed, it’s all the better for not doing so” and with his intelligent style of building jokes, Wells has earned himself an impressive reputation with reviewers and audiences alike.

Alongside comedy, Wells has done writing work for ‘The Revolution Will Be Televised Series 2’ and ‘Have I got News For You’ .

His latest project is called ‘Think Tank’ –  a live show and podcast which combines politics and stand-up, where comedians put forward ideas to a panel of real life politicians. Wells sites Doug Stanhope as one of his biggest inspirations and hopes that this show will inspire discussion long after his set has finished.
