About Gina Yashere
With a comedy career now spanning over 20 years, Gina Yashere took her right of passage as a finalist in the notoriously grueling Hackney Empire New Act of The Year competition back in 1996.
From there on, Gina quickly established herself as class act on the live stand-up circuit and as a regular feature on british TV screens, appearing on Live at the Apollo, Mock the Week, and becoming known for her popular character creations on The Lenny Henry Show.
In 2007 Gina fulfilled a lifelong dream in moving to the USA. The following year she was recognised as the only British comedian ever to appear on the iconic Def Comedy Jam. She featured on Last Comic Standing, The Jay Leno Show, and as a regular correspondent on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. The appearences lead to US audiences proudly adopting Gina as one of their own.
Born to Nigerian parents, raised in London, and now living in America – Gina finds the funny in being both a cultural insider and outsider. Filmed live in San Francisco, her razor sharp observations on everything from kids, flying, addiction, riots and healthcare are delivered here with a disarming directness that never fails to raise the roof!

Gina Yashere was clearly disrupting the status quo from early on in her comedy career. Her Edinburgh debut saw her described by the Scotsman Newspaper as ‘A British rival for Whoopi Goldberg- Lively and exceptionally funny’. She soon secured herself as team captain on BBC panel show Blouse and Skirt (1996), developing a cult following that led to a sellout 30 date UK tour by the end of 2001.
Her infectious personality and wry observations on everything from popular culture to her Nigerian heritage has bagged her loyal audiences not just in the UK and Europe but all over America, Dubai, South Africa, Hong Kong and Singapore. Her global stand-up success has included performances at the prestigious JUST FOR LAUGHS COMEDY FESTIVAL in Toronto and Montreal, whilst TV credits have racked up to include ‘Live at Jongleurs’ for UK Gold, The Comedy store for Channel 5, Jo Brand’s Hot Potatoes and Up Late for the BBC.
Gina’s incredible creative drive has seen her writing several plays for BBC Radio 4 and sketches for the CH4’S Richard Blackwood show, as well penning the occasional entertaining blog on themes such as being a woman in the male dominated world of comedy, the perils of dating, or advice for solving Londoners problems.
A foray into acting led to her appearance in two feature films, “Mr In-Between” in 2001 and “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” as ‘Polythene Pam’. She appeared in the ITV Drama series “Married Single Other” and on stage in The Vagina Monologues in London’s West End.
10 years ago, Yashere admits to finding herself herself stuck in taking her career further in the UK and took the plunge to move stateside. The 43 year old currently lives in Brooklyn with her girlfriend when she’s not busy touring the globe – which clearly is more often than not!
