Biography
Now based in Melbourne, Alasdair Tremblay-Birchall grew up in Canada before studying Engineering at Canberra University. Drawn into the then brand new world of You Tube and spending student days watching Comedy Central specials, he was inspired to give the world of stand-up a go himself.
After 3 years of procrastination and studying theoretical books on how to be funny, he moved to Melbourne and began tentatively dipping his toe into the Open Mic scene. He also became a performer and writer with sketch group Wing Attack! and PANTS (Pants), later becoming co-convener and MC of Brew HaHa, one of Melbourne’s largest comedy nights.
So did he always want to go into comedy? He told ComedyBlogedy.com
“Always is a big word, I mean, when does a desire to go into comedy begin? At conception? Birth? Not for me, my want only began 8 years ago. It arrived at about the same time as my loathing for doing anything else.”
And how does you he go about writing his material? “Sitting and writing, walking and writing, walking and recording, working shit out on stage, through conversation, some pop up completed in your head, I’ve had some come to me in a dream… Basically any way that’s ever been mentioned in a ‘15 ways to increase your writing productivity’ web page or in interviews with comedians/artists or in TED talks or whatever other thing I’ve done to procrastinate doing actual writing – I’ve tried many ways and material appears through this huge variety of ways, I don’t know what the secret is I’m just happy it comes to me sometimes.”
Alasdair has managed to spread the net far and wide, performing traditional stand up alongside other work in radio, television, on Youtube and even in a feature film. Speaking to Pop Culture-Y, he addresses having so much variety in his career:
“I like lots of pies to have fingers in, but it’d be great to at times be only focusing on one thing. I’ll never quit stand up and I’ll do as much of the others as are offered to me. I like having mix of self-driven things and things where other people are driving. Cause self-driven stuff, you are always kind of working on it and thinking about it, whereas when other people are driving a project, you can just show up and do your bit then go home and do whatever.” Well one thing’s for sure, we certainly can’t wait to see what he turns his hand to next!
