Abigoliah Schauman had a surprisingly provincial start in life, growing up in the small rural town of Greenville, Ohio. Daughter of an eye surgeon dad and stay at home mum, at the tender age of 18 years old she moved to New York City to seek her fame and fortune. Attending musical theatre school she reflects “That was the dream – to be on Broadway. Since then everything has taken quite a turn”.
After many years growing tired of living with giant rats, cockroaches and high rents in NYC, she moved to London in 2014 where she lives today working as a regular on the comedy circuit. Was it hard to leave? Speaking to The List she explains “Live stand-up in the States is awesome. It’s electric and creative, and comedy nerds are eager to drink it in. No money in it, though. None. That’s why I moved. I’m a sell-out. Now give me that sweet, sweet sterling”
Abigoliah has taken 5 solo shows to the Edinburgh Festival to date. From Post Coital Confessions in 2015, reflecting on her (not so glamorous) amorous affairs, to her latest offering Do You Know Who I Think I am?! about becoming an unabashedly London liberal after growing up in the conservative Midwest, there’s always something deeply personal and open about her work.
Although evidently growing in popularity with UK audiences, Abigoliah has had international success too. Playing clubs and theatres in back home in the US, she has also performed at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival. She has also opened shows for top comedians Jim Norton, Kyle Kinane, and Gad Emelah. Her comedy extends past the stage too as she was nominated in 2016 for a Malcolm Hardee “Cunning Stunt Award” for buying an incredible amount of outside advertising and then plastering them with fake reviews poking fun at the usefulness of the critics words.
So what’s next for the Brit-merican stand-up? Her ambitions no know bounds but she’s keeping it real, telling Edinburgh49 “I plan on using the show as my platform to run for president. I’m not a politician but I am an American and as a child they told us, anyone can be president. This past year has proved that, so if they let a Reality TV star into the White House why not a plucky Fringe performer?” Watch this space…
