Amongst the brightest new talents, the straight-up Geordie Stand-Up Lauren Pattison is one of the youngest women working professionally on the comedy circuit. As anyone who follows Pattison on social media will know, Pattison is never less than honest about the real, un-instagrammable moments in life
Bursting out of the North East of England and onto the national circuit, Lauren has provided tour support for the likes of Katherine Ryan, as well as repeatedly gracing the comedy stages of Leeds Festival and Latitude Festival. Bio
Despite her relatively young age, 25 year old Newcastle native Lauren is no newbie, having been on the comedy circuit since she was 18. It was when she joined a drama club at school that the shy and introverted child found she had a knack for comedy. Then, juggling her Masters degree in Theatre and Performance with a part-time job, she began doing stand-up shows wherever she could.
What started off as a hobby soon stepped up a gear when she was offered a paid gig at Newcastle comedy venue The Stand. She recalls in Beyond The Joke – “I was like – what I can get paid for this?! And the other acts looked at me like I was stupid and told me ‘you do know you could do this for a career?’ It’s the greatest feeling ever being able to do a job that you truly love, and also to make that transition from juggling a day job you hate with comedy as a side dish, to making comedy the main course.”
During her last year of university she met comedian, TV personality ( and now personal mentor) Katherine Ryan. She told the Evening Standard –
“I was in rehearsals one day when she [Katherine] tweeted me,” Lauren explained. I had been in a competition final and in her tweet she said, ‘hey dude, how much material have you got?’ She said she needed someone to support her on tour for two dates near me and would need to do 20-25 minutes.
At this stage I was still quite new and the longest I had done was about 15 minutes. I said yes and I went home that night and wrote and wrote… It was amazing to be given the chance to be put up a level like that.”
Lauren was hired and her dreams were realised, supporting Katherine Ryan in her hometown at the Tyne Theatre, Newcastle to an audience of over 1000 comedy punters.
Along with Ryan, Lauren cites Sarah Millican and Sara Pascoe as her comedy influences, and her debut show certainly draws on the searing honesty and fearless filth of her predecessors.
Her debut show, Lady Muck, chronicles the past 18 months of her life, from moving to London where she had “no money, no friends, and terrible flatmates”, to being ghosted by her long-term boyfriend, and eventually finding peace with her insecurities. It’s a familiar millennial tale that looks set to give the rising star the next big foot up the ladder she deserves. Receiving a Herald Angel Award and nominations for the Amused Moose Best Show and Edinburgh Best Newcomer Comedy Award, the success of the show has seen it go on to a sell out run at London’s Soho Theatre, as well as runs at the Perth and Adelaide Fringe in Australia, and the Auckland Comedy Festival in New Zealand.
