About Sam Avery
One of Liverpool’s best loved comedians, viral blogger, best selling author and father to toddler twins, Sam Avery originally wanted to be a rock star. Despite being signed up by BMG Records at the age of 17 (he had to resign from his beloved paper round), and subsequent tours with Motorhead and Ice T, his musical dreams never quite took flight – luckily for the comedy world. After subsequent jobs (including a brief stint as a stockbroker) failed to excite him the way the smell of sweat and snakebite had, it wasn’t long before Sam Avery turned to the stand-up circuit.
Runner-up in the North West Comedian Of The Year competition and a finalist in the Leicester Mercury Comedian Of the Year, Scouser Sam Avery has gained a reputation for being able to spark the dullest of rooms into life with his warm, infectious humour and quick wit. Constantly juggling parenthood and it’s perfect bedfellow, comedy, it’s clear that whatever stand-up Sam Avery lacks in a good night’s sleep he makes up for in comic charisma. With regular appearances on Radio 5 Live and BBC 6 Music, an ever increasing social media following, and an observational style that instantly puts his audiences at ease, Sam Avery aka The Learner Parent is certainly growing up to be a considerable comic talent.

Hailing from Childwall, a suburb in Liverpool, Sam Avery was a quasi rock star in his ‘youth’. As a stand-up, Sam Avery worked the local comedy circuit performing in his first in 2003 and in 2005, gained a runner-up position in both the North West Comedian Of The Year competition and in the City Life Comedian of the Year final. His first venture to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival was in 2009 performing as one of four comedians in the Big Value Comedy Show Late, a long running and well recognised launchpad for comic stars of the future. He returned to the Edinburgh fringe in 2013/14 with his successful solo debut “Rock and Dole” which explored his previous life in an autobiographical account of teenage dreams and getting a brief glimpse of fame with his band, dHB.
But it was starting a blog when his twin boys were born to share his parenting jubilations and tribulations that altered his life and career trajectory significantly. Within months he had won Best New Blog at the MAD awards and saw the devoted following to his Facebook page, which he updates regularly, sky rocket – he currently has in the region of 100k followers.
Touring his comedy special, The Learner Parent, to comedy fans across the UK over the past few years, Sam Avery published his first book in 2017 – Confessions of a Learner Parent, commenting that ‘In my wildest dreams I never thought that what started off as a simple way of remembering key moments with my kids would evolve into an actual book. When my wife was pregnant I swore I’d never be one of those parents who over shared stuff about their kids on social media but look at me now! It’s clear that when my kids were born I didn’t just become a parent, I also became a hypocrite.’
Performing around the world, Sam Avery’s popularity continues to grow. He has been featured in the Mail online, the Lad Bible, Netmums and the Liverpool Echo and makes regular appearances on 5 Live and Steve Le Maq’s slot on BBC 6 Music. His latest show, “Toddlergeddon” will be touring throughout 2020 and promises to be another hilarious insight into “raising a toddler with more attitude than Kanye West.” So on the live comedy circuit, Sam Avery’s schedule is set to get even busier. No wonder then that, when asked to describe himself in one sentence, the tired dad’s retort is “constantly searching for my next coffee”.
